Katrell Christie was a 30-something artist turned roller-derby rebel who opened a tea shop in Atlanta. Barely two years later, her life would make a drastic change - and so would the lives of a group of girls half a world away. I chose the name of my tea shop - Dr. Bombay´s Underwater Tea Party - because it sounded whimsical. India wasn´t part of the equation. Not even remotely. I didn´t do yoga. I had no deep yearning to see the Taj Mahal or tour Hindu temples. Indian food? I could take it or leave it. Yet on a whim, Katrell did go. She witnessed the throngs at the Ganges River, toured the tea fields of Darjeeling, and helped string pearls in conservative Hyderabad. But it was in a crowded Buddhist orphanage where she crossed paths with some girls who would change the course of her life. One night we had a conversation about their futures. What did they hope to be when they grew up? They didn´t have any answers. The fear that consumed them was leaving the orphanage. What would happen on the day they were asked to gather their things and leave - to walk out the door and be all alone on the street with no one to turn to and nowhere to go? With her mind racing about their grim futures, Katrell reached the simple conclusion that she couldn´t walk away. So instead she walked forward - on a mission to help them in any small way. Once back at her shop, an idea for The Learning Tea was born. By selling tea, cupcakes, scones, and other treats, Katrell raised enough funds to provide life necessities for the girls - safe housing, uniforms, medical care, tutoring, and ultimately, a college education for each of them. To date, The Learning Tea has helped 11 young girls who once faced the bleakest of futures. Tiger Heart recounts Katrell´s riveting adventures back to India, through the chaotic streets of Mumbai, to tiny villages with roadside tea huts and hot samosas, to elephant crossings and snowcapped mountain switchbacks of the Hi 1. A dazzling, multilayered novel that not only encompasses a searing love story but, with its epic reach from quarks to mythology to geopolitics, also encapsulates the fate of the entire world. As Mumbai empties under the threat of imminent nuclear annihilation, Sarita, a 33-year-old statistician, can only think of one thing: being reunited with Karun, her physicist husband. Why has he vanished? Who is he running from? How will they form the family of three he’s always wanted? To find him, Sarita must journey across the surreal landscape of a near-abandoned city, braving gangs of competing Hindu and Muslim hoodlums. Joining her is Jaz - nominally a Muslim but whose true religion has always been sex with other men. Danger lurks around every corner, but so does the incongruous and the absurd: the patron goddess Devi Ma has even materialized on a beach to save her city from harm. Sarita’s search leads her to this beach, thrusting her into a trinity so mercurial, so consuming, that it will alter her life more fundamentally than any apocalypse to come. Fearlessly provocative, wickedly comedic, and propelled with rocket-fuel energy, The City of Devi exuberantly upends assumptions of politics, religion, sex, and India´s global emergence. 1. In the spirit of Khaled Hosseini, Nadia Hashimi, and Shilpi Somaya Gowda comes this powerful debut from a talented new voice - a sweeping, emotional journey of two childhood friends in Mumbai, India, whose lives converge only to change forever one fateful night. India, 1986: Mukta, a 10-year-old village girl from the lower-caste Yellama cult, has come of age and must fulfill her destiny of becoming a temple prostitute, as her mother and grandmother did before her. In an attempt to escape her fate, Mukta is sent to be a house girl for an upper-middle class family in Mumbai. There she discovers a friend in the daughter of the family, high-spirited eight-year-old Tara, who helps her recover from the wounds of her past. Tara introduces Mukta to an entirely different world - one of ice cream, reading, and a friendship that soon becomes a sisterhood. But one night in 1993, Mukta is kidnapped from Tara´s family home and disappears. Shortly thereafter, Tara and her father move to America. A new life in Los Angeles awaits them, but Tara never recovers from the loss of her best friend or stops wondering if she was somehow responsible for Mukta´s abduction. Eleven years later Tara, now an adult, returns to India determined to find Mukta. As her search takes her into the brutal underground world of human trafficking, Tara begins to uncover long-buried secrets in her own family that might explain what happened to Mukta - and why she came to live with Tara´s family in the first place. Moving from a traditional Indian village to the bustling modern metropolis of Mumbai to Los Angeles and back again, this is a heartbreaking and beautiful portrait of an unlikely friendship - a story of love, betrayal, and ultimately redemption. 1.
